Drill Commands

"ALERT" -The Scout term for "Attention". Hands closed at the sides; arms hanging naturally; heels together; feet turned out at an angle of 30 degrees; body erect; head still; eyes looking forward towards the horizon.

"AT EASE" - Left foot moved about 30 cm from the right foot; heels in line; hands clasped behind back, right hand in the palm of the left; thumbs crossed; fingers and hands straight and pointing towards the ground.

"EASY" - Relax the limbs, body and head. Feet are not moved. On the command "Troop", "Pack", "Unit" or "Crew", the position of "AT EASE" is resumed.

"DISMISS" - Turn to the right, pause, salute, pause and then step off independently.

"BREAK OFF" - This differs from the "Dismiss" in that it does not signify the end of the parade but only a break in it. The salute is not given and the squad may break off from any formation. After the order, there is a slight pause and then Scouts move off independently.

Giving Drill Commands

A word of command is divided into two parts

CAUTION - a warning that something is about to happen this would normally be “Troop” but could be “Parade” (if parading with other sections) or “District” if parading with other troops of the District.

EXECUTIVE - the command word(s) such as “Alert”. These should be said quickly, not drawn out. The parade should all move at the command.
